Journal from Inverness, CA on 21 June 2026

Every time we drive by that turn on Sir Francis Drake, where it crosses the Lagunitas Creek and opens onto the winding creek lined with trees, distant hills behind it, I have a strong urge to stop what I’m doing and paint the scene. But I never have the time, or I don’t have my pochade box.

Looking down Lagunitas Creek: still blue water lined with willows and reeds, dry gold hills low in the distance under a pale sky.

This time I had my sketchbook. We drove up to Inverness with my family, and I found 15 minutes to run off and sketch it out.

Some reference photos and a thumbnail would have to do. It’s rough, but it gives me what I need to start a study back in the studio.
